Dec 31, Capri

31 December 2008. On Wednesday the 31st we woke at 9:00 AM. Had breakfast and walked to town. The lane is wide enough for a car. If we meet one we must step off or someone must wait. Missed the bus again; they don’t seem to follow their own schedules too well. Caught the 12:10 and arrived at the port in Sorrento and walked down a long ramp to catch the hydrofoil to Capri. Not too full going out. We stopped at the port of Marina Grande. We took the cable car to the top and walked down and saw the Garden of Caesar Augustus and a 14th century Monastery in honor of St James. We saw a perfumery that smelled wonderful. I’ve forgotten the name. We walked back up. These are good walks for a little old lady. We stopped at the famous Piazza Umberto for lunch. Had a ham, cheese, and tomato toasted sandwich. It was the best thing I had eaten in Italy! I also used a pay toilet - 50 cents. It had a seat so it was the best pee in Italy! We rode the cable car down and hydrofoil back. It was very crowded. Brian was ashamed of the way his mother makes her way to the front; I must have learned it from the nuns at St Peters he thinks. When we arrived in Sorrento we waited for a bus that never came; they had stopped early for New years Eve. We started the long walk uphill when a taxi came by. We took it all the way home for 53.80 euros. Very expensive ride but worth it. I had tea and a cookie and nite nite again. Brian went up into the town of St Agata and took part in their ancient New Year’s Eve festival – lots of singing and dancing by the whole town up in the church square.
